Supporters of the Asian American Legal Advocacy Center discussed a bill introduced this week in the Georgia Assembly requiring all driver’s license tests to be given in English.

The group held a Lunar New Year event at the Oriental Pearl restaurant in Chamblee Saturday night. They oppose the bill because they feel it unfairly targets legal immigrants.Norman Chu, former president of the Organization of Chinese Americans said, “When immigrants come in, what they need more is actually to get a driver’s license to work and to contribute to the economy of the state of Georgia and the U.S.”Helen Kim Ho, Executive Director of AALAC said, “The citizens of Georgia made it abundantly clear that an English-only driver’s license bill was bad for our state, but apparently some legislators are not listening.”The bill, House Bill 72, was filed this week by Representatives James Mills and Timothy Bearden.Similar bills were defeated during the 2009 and 2010 legislative sessions.
